Dollar stores are gaining recognition as legitimate retailers with updated interiors and the addition of more food, perishables and frozen, to their merchandise.

Although 60% of consumers who shop this channel have low or fixed incomes, there has been a shift post-recession with a higher proportion of affluent consumers shopping at dollar stores (about 20% with household income of +$75,000 USD).

In store assortment has evolved to continue attracting this segment with more recognizable brands and healthier prepared foods.
